thomas is a precise drummer with great technique and killer chops but I detest! his feel and touch on the drums and this clip proves it again for me. I won't get into the clip it speaks for itself but as Dazz said Thomas's playing comes across off as Stilted in a big way.

surely sticks have no effect on feel...its placement of notes and attitude among other things....
imo his stick is very well designed and feels great...a tad big, but nice. of course not good for everything tho....

Palmer, would you mind defining what exactly you mean by feel?
As mentioned earlier in this topic, for me it has a lot to do with "touch". To me, Weckl comes to mind as someone with great feel and quite honestly I find it hard to imagine that he could create the same sounds with Lang's sticks.
As I said, what exactly do you consider main components of feel? What is it influenced by?

ur right touch does come into it and weckl is good at that (lots of finess) and we covered that in my lesson and the exact difference between him and lang and what he thought of him!
but thomas is a BIG guy with big hands and has very very strong technique and so the sticks probably dont feel as big. thats how i have progressed in the last year....using some of thomas' techniques, imo, calls for a bigger stick, like the corp drummers. also its easier to play quiter with a big stick and u can get a good dynamic range. thomas' stick has great balance and a nice tip.....its great for most contemporary music. when im doing something soft i'll use a smaller stick of course, just like you'd change from a 22' to 18' on a jazz gig.
as for feel, i have been thinking bout this with regeards to technique (like maybe i should play looser) but i dont think it actually has anything to do with technique it comes from the person....their dynamics between each limb (like wot jojo said about ferrone in that clinic), their placement of notes and their attitude etc etc. sticks would have such a minimal effect on this. and once you used to "your" sticks....no effect.
Stick size aside Louie, what about the idea that he has no feeling for groove and was as I said in post, just running through this exercise like a routine? Is THIS what drumming is all about?
